Before the world sang about angels and “silent night” at Christmas time, Jesus’ mother Mary—while pregnant and surrounded by unknowns—offered a powerful song of her own that imagines a more hopeful vision for the future. Although separated by thousands of years, our own circumstances are not all that different than Mary’s. Where might we find hope amidst war, death, and chaos? How can music be a site of protest and resistance, as well as joy, praise, and building community? What can Mary teach us about holding multiple tensions and experiences at once?
